In 1992, Mary graduated from the University Notre Dame with a BA in Government and International Relations. After she received her J.D. with Honors from Drake University School of Law in 1995, she clerked for the Honorable Mark S. Cady, with the Iowa Court of Appeals. Her work in the field of corrections law began in 1996, when she was selected as an Honor's Attorney in the Federal Bureau of Prisons Central Office, located in Washington, D.C. Mary transferred to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Chicago, Illinois in 1997, where she handled various pretrial detention issues and civil matters. In 2000, Mary was selected to initiate the first North Central Region Consolidated Legal Center (CLC), located at the Federal Medical Center in Rochester, Minnesota. As the Minnesota CLC Lead Attorney, Mary handled various legal issues, including complicated medical malpractice cases and mental health commitments. In 2003, Mary worked for the Iowa Department of Corrections as a Legislative Liaison and EEO Compliance Officer in Des Moines, Iowa. She came back to the BOP in 2005, where she worked as a Senior CLC Attorney in the North Central Region, primarily providing legal assistance for USP Leavenworth. In 2015, Mary was a participant in Judge Marten's Prison Workgroup on issues related in inmate reentry. In 2016, she was selected for her current position, Deputy Regional Counsel for the North Central Region.
